Adult Child Estrangement Therapy in Vancouver, WA and throughout Washington State
Support for Parents When an Adult Child Cuts Contact
When your adult child cuts off contact, the pain is unlike most other losses. There is no funeral, no clear endpoint, no script for what estranged parents are supposed to do next. Most people in your life don’t know what to say, and the cultural conversation around estrangement rarely makes room for your side of it.
You may be asking yourself what happened, what you missed, what you could have done differently. Estranged parents often carry grief, anger, confusion, and shame, sometimes all at once. You may have been blindsided, or you may have noticed the distance growing long before contact stopped. Either way, the loss is real and it deserves support.
What estranged parents often experience:
Grief that has no clear container or timeline
Shame and isolation, especially when others don’t understand
Replaying the relationship looking for answers
Anger that feels complicated or hard to justify
Missing your grandchildren or other family members caught in the middle
A loss of identity
Not knowing whether to reach out or stay quiet
What therapy can offer:
The goal of this work is not to push you toward any particular outcome. Whether or not reconciliation ever happens, estranged parents deserve to heal. That means being able to carry this without it consuming you, understanding your own part in the relationship without self-destruction, and finding a way to live fully in the present while holding an uncertain future.
I use IFS to help you work with the parts of you that are grieving, angry, ashamed, or still searching for answers. Each of those parts has something important to say, and none of them needs to be pushed away. When there are specific memories or experiences that feel stuck or disproportionately charged, EMDR can help the brain finish processing what it hasn’t been able to move through on its own.
This work is not about deciding who was right. It is about helping you find your footing again.
